When we arrived in Melbourne we almost immediately hit the road as we had the first 200km ahead of us with some stops along the way.
First though, in the COVID world we are living in, we had to upload our negative test results to clear us for travel in Australia!
Then we were really on our way! Our destination for the day was Apollo Bay where we would spent the night. Most of this trip we were going to drive along the coast along the Great Ocean Road. The Great Ocean Road is an Australian National Heritage listed 240-kilometre stretch of road along the south-eastern coast of Australia between Torquay and Allansford. Built by returned soldiers between 1919 and 1932 and dedicated to soldiers killed during World War I.
There was immediately some great scenery along the route! The coast line is truly amazing.
The first real stop was Bells Beach which gave us some taste of what was to come.
Next we were going to Split Point Lighthouse in Aireys Inlet. A nice walk on what remained a beautiful sunny day
And then somewhere between Aireys Inlet and Lorne, we passed the official entrance of the great Ocean Road!
Next up was our final stop for the day before going to our hotel. Henderson Falls. There were a LOT of steps to go down (and also to climb back up...) but it was really more than worth it. Water falls can really have something magical about them. This one certainly did not disappoint.
After this it was one more stretch down to Apollo Bay for the night. During the drive, I could not stop taking pictures of the beautiful coastal scenery....
When we arrived at the hotel we were knackered. Did we really only just arrive this morning? What a beautiful day to start our holiday off with!
Once at the motel we went for some freshly caught fish dinner at the harbor at the "Fisherman's Coop". Highly recommend it!
