Tasmania - Drive from Stanley to Corinna

After Stanley it was time to go deeper into the Western wilderness of Tasmania. We had been able to book one of the last family cottages of the old logging town of Corinna.

At the peak of wood logging, Corinna had been quite the town with its own police and postal office. But it had slowly been abandoned after its hay days until some people decided to re-purpose it as a vacation village.

There is a year-round presence at Corinna because the management is also is responsible for the cable barge that allows  vehicles to travel from north or south across the Pieman River. It is the only cable driven vehicular barge in Tasmania.

When we left Stanley the first part of the route took us along some spectacular beaches, including the "Edge of the world". So we drove and stopped a couple of times. And then, after the last beach, we literally took a turn into the wild.

The road to Corinna was S.P.E.C.T.A.C.U.L.A.R. We drove for hours and only passed 3 other cars. Endless wilderness views where you feel for certain a human has not yet left a footprint. Soon we lost all internet connection and cell phone reception and we were not going to get it back until we would emerge to head to Cradle Mountain in a couple of days.

When we reached Corinna the little village was so welcoming and cute, we could not wait for the next few days in the middle of nowhere. That afternoon we did a very short walk and then settled in our house.

The Cable Barge

The operator told us that in peak season (and about a week after we left) cars would line up for hours to cross. When we were there, there were no queues. Talk about good timing! :-)
