We stayed at the one hotel on the island that had a bar that also served the local islanders (200 in total). We got to chat and collected some local facts: during winter electricity can easily go out for a couple of weeks at a time, they eat what they grow and everything else requires careful planning to get it from the mainland. The ferry comes once a day in the summer season, once every couple of days, or not at all pending weather in the winter season.There is one school for the 30 kids on the island. The kids leave the island when they are 12 to go to the mainland boarding schools. Currently there are two 10 year old boys on the island (twins)
But they all would not want to live anywhere else. The sense of community, the connection with nature, it is something they would not want to do without.
So we went out exploring the day we arrived and the day after. The pictures speak for themselves I guess. We started out foggy, but ended in sunshine. Mees and Lina turned out to be mountain goats and loved every second of rock-climbing, sea shell collecting and beach exploring. Dirk and I just enjoyed the surroundings and the fact that we were there as a family.
