Before Singapore's fairly recent modernization, people lived in so-called Kampongs. Little villages, mostly on stilts, often lacking running water or electricity.
Only one Kampong is left these days "Lorong Buankok"
The students could either visit the last kampong, find out more about the history if Singapore through books or online resources, or do other things in order to research the topic.
Lina made her own version of a replica and like the ones in the past (Katie Morag's island, the cave man, etc...) it quickly became a family project :-)
