Lanzarote is a volcanic island largely covered in lava from an eruption in the 1800's. Obviously the resorts along the coastline are quite lush as they have been planted with palm trees and there is a lot of irrigation, but otherwise I personally had the feeling we had landed on Mars.
We went to visit the national park at the hart of the eruption and it was quite impressive. No trees at all! The volcano is still active although it has not erupted since. For the tourists they poured a bucket of water in one of the holes and out came a geyser of steam.
The eruption had also created some of the largest lava caves in the world, so that was our next stop. Too dark for really good pictures so not a lot there, but really spectacular.
After that it was time for the Cactus garden, and that was also the last stop. Good timing as by that time Mees and Lina needed to cool off in the pool, and so did we.
